What is Longboard Dancing World? Start here!

Hello there! That handsome chap in the Instagram picture below is Shawn, the founder of this project – Longboard Dancing World. And yeah, it’s actually me typing, so I guess I am going to stop writing in third person now…because that is just strange…?

So what’s actually the point of Longboard Dancing World?

I’m IN LOVE with longboard dancing & freestyle. I started with the sport in the Summer of 2018 and fell in love with it very quickly. In June of 2019, I attended my first longboard dancing camp in Portugal, and my addiction with longboard dancing grew even further. I became hooked on longboard dancing like a junkie on crack.

But as I became more enamored with my new love, I noticed something problematic with the sport as a whole – The community is awesome, truly some of the nicest and sweetest people I have ever met, but information is disjointed, and it’s all over the place.

What does that mean in simplest terms? To me it means the sport is setting itself up to self-destruct. It will inevitably bring itself to its own extinction.

Why?

Because it’s hard to get started properly if you’re a complete newbie. A proper dancing deck is expensive, and it’s hard to teach yourself.

Because it’s hard to break past a plateau if you’re an intermediate rider. How many times have we met people from HUGE capital cities, saying things like, “yeah I mostly board by myself” or “yeah our crew is about 4 people total”? It’s hard to keep motivated with anything too long if you’re alone.

Because information is all over the place. We’ve all spent hours scouring YouTube for good tutorials. We’ve combed the web for workshops and classes and meetups.

Because the sport is evolving in a good way, but in a strange way. My Freestylers, I love you guys from the bottom of my heart, I do some of it myself. But it can’t be denied that at competitions landing a huge trick will get more rallying out of the crowd and judges, than a technically perfect flowing dance line. And I get it, I do. But this is going keep pushing people into this “go big or go home” with crazy freestyle tricks, instead of just focusing on flow.

So in August of 2019, I set out with this project with a humble but important goal in mind…

My mission with this site is to unite the community, centralize information, and put emphasis on longboard dancing

I want to grow this site into the web’s MOST comprehensive resource longboard dancing. I want it to be full of the best tutorials the internet has to offer, longboard dancers from all over the world who are willing to link with traveling dancers and show them their home cities, gear reviews, trick tips, everything.

There’s a ton of information already out there. But like I said it’s all crazy mixed up everywhere, it’s rarely updated, and most of it doesn’t specifically focus on dancing.

Myself and my ambassadors are out here, looking to change that.

I don’t want to make money with this project. I don’t want to become famous. All I want to do is find people who love what I love, meet them, board with them, improve with them, and welcome them into my longboard dancing family.

If any or all of that sounds interesting to you, and you want to be a part of that, just head over to our ambassador sign up page, and I’ll welcome you aboard with open arms. ❤️

Much love from Leipzig in Germany,

Shawn
