Hej! I’m Robin (aka Birdy), and currently I call Stockholm in Sweden my longboard dancing home.
How long have I been longboard dancing?
I hate going to the gym and am not big on group sports due to the fact that you are dependent on others schedules. I have always been interested in board culture but never gave anything but snowboarding a shot. I causally mentioned to a friend in the summer of 2017 that my goal of summer 2018 was to learn to longboard. As it turned out that was something she was interested in as well and after we saw GIFs of longboard dancing we decided not to wait a whole year and in the autumn we bought boards at the local shop in Stockholm, Kahalani, and learned to cruise and dance at the same time. Due to injury and other personal circumstances I have skated for 14 months of those nearly 2 years.
What’s my current dancing setup?
Deck: Bastl Walzer / Wheels: Orangatang fat frees / Trucks: Paris v2s / Bearings: Seismic Tekton
What motivated me to start longboard dancing?
I saw a gif randomly on Tumblr and it was love at first sight. I always associated skateboarding and longboarding with coolness, but never beauty. It opened a door into a truly beautiful, new world for me.
What’s been my favorite longboard dancing experience thus far?
The camp. Other highlights were getting to watch people I had only seen and learned from on Youtube and instagram skating in person at SYCLD 19, and getting my current board after being quite unsatisfied with my original board and it feeling like I was Cinderella with my glass slipper.
What’s my favorite move to do on a longboard?
Any sort of hopping step. I am quite short and a longboarding friend accidentally once wrote “hoppit” instead of “hobbit” to describe me and I like to think it was his subconscious noting how much and often I like to do hoppy steps.
What cool things do I like to do, other than longboard dancing?
I like to read and indoor plants are also a big obsession. I watch an absurd amount of tv and film, like going on monster walks around the city, visiting beautiful cafes, and taking pictures.
